The adventurers – sans Tiva – raced back to the shadows of the hallway behind them. There was no sign of Tiva to be found anywhere. Resigned to the need to continue without her, they doubled back and headed to the ground floor of the tower, grabbing the swords from the 2nd floor on the way. They placed the swords in the holes on the floor in the same arrangement they had seen before, and the swords sprang to life, attacking them.
All party members fought valiantly against their newly animated foes, and even Hagrid the Dire Wolf wrestled a couple of them from the air, giving them a violent shake before casting them to the ground. In the end the party was victorious. One sword remained in the spot where they placed it, and now reality matched the image seen in the mirror in the corner of the room. Delmirev took the sword as they headed upstairs.
Upon reaching the chest and suits of armor again, the party decided to challenge the animated constructs. After some combat the suits of armor lay in pieces on the floor and it was revealed that the contents of the chest were none other than Boddynock Schleppen, the gnome bard who had given the leather pouch/bag to Ellywick. He recounted that he had been hearing voices in his head for a while telling him to come to this tower and help, but when he encountered this chest and tried to open it the suits of armor had stuffed him inside. He said he was glad he had convinced Ellywick to come as followup, and seemed surprised that she didn’t remember even meeting him, saying that she apparently hides her drunkenness well.
The party proceeded to the fourth floor and at the end of the hall were greeted by a 40-ft drop. Looking around, they saw a chimney-like chamber 20ft by 25ft that extended below, and a door directly underneath them at the bottom. On the ceiling of this chamber were 5 chests attached to the ceiling. Delmirev opted to toss Ellywick up to the chests where she used her acrobatic prowess to open one of them. A rope fell down, attached to the interior of the chest. Opening the remaining chests revealed the same contents, and the party used these ropes to descend to the floor.
Ascending another stairway, the party encountered a room adorned with a large rug and two smaller carpets. Passing this furniture, they went to examine a pool of water in the distance on the left. As Delmirev and Kithri had turned to the right to examine a hallway that took them further, Delmirev was seized with an uneasy feeling that Ellywick and Boddynock were in danger. Turning around to check, it was alarmed to see that the rugs they had passed were sneaking toward the two unsuspecting gnomes and rushed to cast an Identify spell on one of them. The other rug sprang into action and wrapped itself around Delmirev’s head to try to suffocate it. Combat ensued, and the rugs were destroyed.
Climbing a 2nd stair, the team proceeded through a series of long hallways with sword traps, each of which glazed off of Kithri’s shoulders and injuring her, but leaving the remaining party unscathed. The team went upstairs a 3rd time and decided to take turns posting guard and resting for a time.
